GEO for WooCommerce: how product highlights feed AI search
Feedlift · July 22, 2026
SEO was about ranking a page. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is about being readable when an AI assembles an answer. For a webshop the difference is concrete: when a shopper asks an AI surface for "a travel mug that keeps coffee hot for 8 hours and fits a cup holder", the engine is not skimming your product page's marketing prose. It is matching against structured product data.
Where the structured data comes from
For Google's shopping surfaces, that structured layer is the Merchant Center feed. And Google is explicit about one attribute's role in the AI era: product highlights help customers "discover information about your products across AI-driven surfaces, like AI Mode in Google Search". That is Google's own wording — we are not going to dress it up with invented statistics, because none have been published.
What the attribute delivers is exactly the shape a matching engine wants: 4–6 short, factual, benefit-first fragments per product. "Double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks hot for 8 hours." "Fits standard car cup holders." Each one is a verifiable claim an engine can line up against a shopper's request.
Why most stores are invisible here
Because the attribute is optional, and writing compliant fragments for a whole catalog is real editorial work: 150-character limit, minimum two per product, no promotional language, no prices, and everything must be true to the product. Multiply by 500 products and it becomes the task nobody does — which is precisely why doing it is an edge.
What GEO does NOT mean
Honesty matters more in the AI era, not less. Three things to keep straight:
- No one can promise placement. Google decides what its AI surfaces show. GEO work makes your catalog readable; it does not buy results. - Different engines, different pipelines. Google's surfaces read Merchant Center. Other AI assistants have their own commerce programs and crawlers — structured, factual product data helps broadly, but "one feed, every AI" is not how it works. - Facts only. An AI surface repeating an invented claim about your product is a liability, not a win. Generation must be grounded in the data you already maintain.
Doing it in WooCommerce
Feedlift automates exactly this loop inside wp-admin: it reads each product's existing title and description, writes 4–6 spec-validated highlight fragments, you review and edit them like any other product field, and the values land as feed-ready meta your existing feed plugin maps to product_highlight. Unchanged products re-run from cache for free, so keeping the catalog current is maintenance, not a project.
The free tier covers 25 products — enough to see what your own catalog's structured layer looks like. Try the live demo or get the free plugin.
