What are Google product highlights — and why your feed probably has none
Feedlift · July 21, 2026
Open any competitive product on Google Shopping and look at the listing panel: short benefit bullets next to the image. That is the product_highlight attribute — an optional Merchant Center field most stores leave empty.
Why it matters now
Google's own documentation says submitting product highlights helps customers "discover information about your products across AI-driven surfaces, like AI Mode in Google Search" — alongside the classic Shopping surfaces. In other words: highlights are part of the structured data Google's AI shopping experiences read. We won't quote you a click-through statistic, because Google hasn't published one. What is verifiable is the spec and where the data shows up.
The spec, in one paragraph
Each highlight is a short benefit fragment, 1–150 characters. Google recommends 4–6 per product and accepts up to 10. Submit fewer than 2 and the attribute is dropped with a warning. No prices, no promo text, no links, no competitor comparisons, no shouting. Delivery is feed- or API-only — there is no on-page markup equivalent, so your product feed has to carry it.
Why stores skip it
Because writing 4–6 compliant fragments for every product is real editorial work. A 500-product catalog is 2,000–3,000 lines of copy that must stay inside the character limit, avoid promo phrasing, and actually reflect the product. That's exactly the kind of work AI is good at — if the output is validated against the spec instead of pasted raw.
The afternoon fix
Feedlift adds a Google Shopping tab to every WooCommerce product: one click generates 4–6 spec-validated highlights from the product's own title and description, you review and edit in wp-admin, and the values land as product meta your existing feed plugin maps in one dropdown. Bulk-run the catalog on a paid plan, or try 25 products free — no account needed. Try it on your own product right on our homepage.
